Crux Under the Moon with “Flair”

At this time of the year, the “dark emu” is upside down, setting to the east, and nearly pecking the ground. The head of the emu is the Coalsack nebula set under (or in this case over) the Crux (Southern Cross). It was a pretty full moon which washes out the stars, but you can see the galactic centre of the Milky Way running up the middle of the lens flare. Technically, you wouldn’t say this was a great photo because of the flare, but I am using it here as a key part of the image…. You will see a rainbow effect in the edges of the flare if you look closely.

I would not normally shoot astro under these conditions, but glad I did!

The image is taken at New Norcia from the NE corner of the Education Centre looking South down the old Great Northern Highway, past the Education Centre down to the Museum.
