Part of the Norfolk tradition of calmness is the Norfolk Worry Stone.
Over the centuries Fen People have searched these out on their beaches to old in their hands to give comfort in times of stress, by holding such a stone which fitted the hand exactly, they found peace returned to their troubled souls. Tradition has it that their worries pass into the stone.
For those who did not have access to the beaches, the practice of making worry monks from clays found near Monastic Buildings was started, indeed the first Worry Monks were made in the village of Upwell, where Welle Manor Hall is situated, which dates back to 974 A.D. when Benedictine Monks lived there.
Today, each little monk is lovingly created by hand in the sincere hope that he will be a faithful companion for many years to come.
