The two large schools under construction, namely St Gertrude’s for the European girls, and St Ildephonsus’ for the European boys were designed around central chapels. Torres wanted these chapels to be ornamented such that when you walked inside, you could be anywhere in Italy or Spain. To do that, he needed a master ornamentor. He borrowed Father Lesmes Lopez OSB from the abbey of Montserrat in 1910, first to perfect his painting style in art school in Rome, then to come to New Norcia. Fr. Lesmes arrived in New Norcia in 1913 and left for Spain in 1921, completing his huge legacy of artworks in just under nine years! According to medieval legend, upon that fateful day the nightingale ascends the highest tree it can find, and from there pours forth a ceaseless torrent of passionate, ebullient song. In this transcendent singing, the motifs of love, pain, and bliss are mystically intertwined in an almost intoxicated ecstasy. The song climaxes in death itself, which thus becomes, paradoxically, the apotheosis and consummation of love and of life. The legend of the dying nightingale functions as a symbolic depiction of the life and death of Christ, as well as the progress of the individual soul towards its final deific eternity when it is dissolved into the realms of celestial light. These exceptional translations of two great popes both convey the meditative aura of the originals and incite to return to them. May they help rediscovery of Latin as part of a living tradition—vehicle of history, culture, and faith—especially through its use in the liturgy.”
—Pius Mary Noonan, OSB, Notre Dame Priory, Tasmania

Contributors

Pope Urban VIII (Author)
Pope Alexander VII (Author)
Fr.
